One of the most beautifully powerful things that a woman can do is take and give strength to the women around her. This was something that was being done by Ashley Larson, the mother of a sweet 3-year-old baby girl named Scout Larson and the daughter of 57-year-old Diane Willoughby. Ashley started a project with Scout in which she was dressing up her daughter as the fiery and feisty strong women and through these photo-shoots, they both actually were creating something which had the power to showcase ‘WOMEN POWER’ to the rest of the world.
The reason as to why this incredible project started is even more heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Scout’s Grandma, whom she calls, ‘Nonnie’, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2016.
It was a tough time for the family, and when Ashley saw that Scout had started to get concerned about her Nonnie losing her hair, the mother of the toddler thought that she should do something to ease their minds. It was then that Ashley decided to remind herself and teach her daughter that women are strong. That is how they came up with the idea that they choose strong female icons of our times and teach Scout about the strength that women have in them by dressing her up like the female icons.
After listing out the people they wanted to cover up, Ashley taught Scout some things about each of them and collectively they decided on the photographs. This project ran for a little over one year, and throughout the last year, Ashley kept posting the photographs of Scout dressed up as those strong women on her Instagram account.
This entire time corresponded to the duration when Scout’s Nonnie was being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. She had full 6 rounds of intense chemotherapy from the month of June to September, and later when she regained some strength, another roadblock came in front of the family. Nonnie had to undergo a double mastectomy surgery.
All this while, Ashley kept shooting and the entire project made her teach Scout about the strength of women first hand. In fact, this project and that time has even taught Ashley a lot. She wrote at Bored Panda, “This project has probably taught me just as much or more than it taught my daughter. I truly want Scout to be able to look back at this and know that women are just as strong as any man.”
Apart from the strong women, Ashley also made sure that they included some of Scout’s favorites as well, like Ellen and some Disney Characters.
"I stand for honesty , equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you want to be treated, and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values, that's what I stand for. I also believe it dance." – @theellenshow ⭐️⭐️TAG @THEELLENSHOW SO SHE CAN SEE THIS ⭐️⭐️ (We normally save our twinning for #twinningtuesday but this one I couldn't wait to post! ) #theellenshow #scoutstolemystyle
The greatest news is that now Nonnie is cancer-free. When Ashley showed the photographs of Scout dressed up as the strong women to Nonnie, she loved them all very much. And as for Scout, she thinks that her Nonnie is tough as nails. It has been because of this special bond only that Ashley decided they should pay a tribute to the lady from whom they all take so much inspiration. Although Nonnie is camera-shy, but for this project she happily said yes, and was happily surprised when she saw the results at the end.
Ashley has now decided that she would make books of all these photographs for her daughter and mother, both. She feels that right now Scout cannot really understand everything about breast cancer, but when she grows up she will see in her grandmother that women are really very strong. She told People, ““My ultimate hope is that once she is my age and can totally grasp the fact that women are fierce, not dainty and delicate — she will see that in her own grandmother.”
The proud mother of the toddler also hopes that when her daughter grows up, there will be equality in how everyone is treated, whether they are male or female, and if not then Scout will have these photographs to look at, to be reminded that women are strong and powerful, just like she is.
Aren’t Scout and Nonnie too cute and inspiring? We surely feel motivated to be always strong, after watching these amazing females giving out this message after having gone through the tough times. What about you? Tell us in the comments section below. And yeah… More Power To Every Girl!
