Shah Rukh Khan, the King of Bollywood’s birthday is a special day for all his fans. But for me, it is a bit more special because it is also my mom’s birthday. So, the celebrations at our home have this different kind of euphoria. Shah Rukh Khan for me and for so many girls who grew up dreaming that we too someday find our ‘Raj’, is the epitome of love. We literally swoon at even his words and all the emotions, whenever he talks anything romantic in movies, make us fall in love with him all over again, every time.
The most magical though, have been the movies he did with the late director, Yash Chopra. I am sure I am not the only person, who loves their films from the deepest corners of our hearts. So, as the world (the world of SRK’s fans), celebrate his birthday, we would like to celebrate the bond that SRK had with Yash Chopra, because if that was not there, our entire generation could have never felt the power of true love.
This epic relationship between SRK and Yash Chopra started when they did their first film together, Darr, which was released in 1993. Apparently, before casting SRK for the role of an obsessive lover, this role was offered to many actors such as Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Aamir Khan among other. But, as destiny would have it, Shah Rukh Khan got the role and the film became a runaway hit and is a cult classic now.
It was during this time itself that Yash Chopra decided to always work with SRK in all his subsequent films, and that happened too. After Darr, which ever film that the legendary director directed, had SRK as the protagonist. Darr had SRK in a negative role, but after that every movie with Yashji was romantic, and so romantic in fact, that it became the definition of love for an entire generation.
In 1995, Yash Chopra’s son Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge opened to screens and since then, it has opened the hearts of millions of people, who consider it their life. I am also one of them; having watched it so many times that I have its dialogues on my tongue.
Do you know, SRK had initially declined to do DDLJ, because he thought that a positive role may not be good for him, as he had seen success previously by playing negative roles. Aditya Chopra persuaded him relentlessly, and when he suggested that Shah Rukh could never become a superstar unless he becomes “every woman’s dream man, and every mother’s dream son.” The film as you all know is the biggest film of SRK’s career and he became the ‘King Of Romance’, only after this.
Yash Chopra returned to direct a musical romantic ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ with Shah Rukh Khan in 1997. The music of the movie was indeed worked upon very diligently, and music director Uttam Singh had given 100 tunes, out of which only 9 were used and the music of this film proved to be very successful. After this movie, SRK again made us fall in love with love in Mohabbatein in 2000, which was directed by Aditya Chopra.
Then came Veer-Zaara in 2004, the classic romantic movie which was directed by Yash Chopra. This eternal love-story had such beautiful songs, that they define sacrificial love for all of us. The compositions were the unused melodies of late music director Madan Mohan, which were revived by his son Sanjeev Kohli for the movie.
Shah Rukh Khan’s association with the Yash Raj banner continued with Chak De and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, before Yash Chopra came back to direct his last film Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which was released in 2012. The iconic director died before the release of the film. The shooting of a song, which was supposed to be shot in the Swiss Alps, in the typical Yash Chopra style with the heroine in a white chiffon saree, could not be completed, so in the movie, the song plays, giving a tribute to the legendary Director. When Yash Chopra died, SRK had said that he had lost a father figure.
One of the most endearing aspects of this relationship was that Shah Rukh never asked for a certain amount of fees from Yash Chopra, he took whatever was given to him with love. After all, love was the emotion that they portrayed for us all, and now we know that any bond built on the base of love and respect becomes the most beautiful aspect of anyone’s life. And so is this aspect of Shah Rukh Khan’s life, truly commendable and lovable for us.
